First-Half goal from Mesa gives Patriot Women 1-0 win

FLORENCE, SC – Reserve defender Alejandra Mesa scored in the 25th minute to lift Francis Marion University to a 1-0 blanking of Southern Wesleyan University, Saturday night (Oct. 15) in Conference Carolinas women's soccer action.

The Patriots will head on the road for a visit to Converse University on Wednesday (Oct. 19) at 7:30 p.m.  FMU will celebrate Senior Day on Oct. 22 at 5 p.m. against Erskine College in the final home match.

Mesa's score followed an FMU corner kick by forward Valentina Restrepo and was headed on by defender Gracie Adkins. The score put away from one yard out into the lower right side of the Southern Wesleyan goal at the 24:24 mark. It was the Medellin, Colombia native's first goal as a Patriot.

FMU outshot SWU with a 14-5 margin. Four of the Patriot tries were on frame, but only one of the Warriors' attempts was on target.

Patriot goalkeeper Makayla Willets pulled in the one save, but posted her third shutout of the season and her seventh career clean sheet.  Her one save came on a 25-yard free kick by SWU's Madi Wurst in the 54th minute.

Before her goal, Mesa has a scoring chance in the 16th minute, but her header was snagged by Warrior goalkeeper Amanda Magnin.  Abbey Brosnihan's header on a free kick by JG Garon flew outside the right post in the 19th minute.

Restrepo looked to double the margin in the 60th minute, but her laser from 25 yards away sailed just over the crossbar.  Garon also had a solid scoring opportunity in the 63rd minute, but her header from six yards out, off a cross from Le'Landra Jarvis, found its way outside the left post.

Restrepo led Francis Marion with three shots, while midfielders Ellie Wray and Garon added two shots of their own. Mesa also had two shots for the Patriots. Five other Patriots registered one shot apiece.

Wurst led the Warriors with three shots, while Magnin recorded three saves in goal.

The Patriots registered seven corner kicks to the Warriors' two.
