Bearcats nip Patriots 3-1 in women’s soccer

GREENWOOD, SC - Francis Marion University junior forward Valentina Restrepo scored a 12th-minute goal to put the Patriots on top, but Lander University responded with three unanswered scores to claim a 3-1 Peach Belt Conference win, Monday evening (March 8) in women's soccer action.
 
Francis Marion drops to 2-4-0 overall and 2-4-0 in the PBC.  The Patriots will host Young Harris College on Monday, March 15, at 3:30 p.m.  Attendance is limited to 250 and that includes only season ticket holders, FMU students with pre-acquired tickets, and family members of players and staff with pre-reserved tickets. No walk-up game-day tickets will be sold.
 
Restrepo tallied her first goal as a Patriot at the 11:33 mark.  She received a long over-the-top ball from senior midfielder Sarah Moll, dribbled into the penalty area, and slotted a 16-yard shot past Bearcat keeper Sarah Owen.
 
Lander responded 33 seconds later with the tying goal from Mary Moosbrugger.  The Bearcats then took a 2-1 advantage when Reyna Bueno scored off a Brennen McCarthy assist at 30:54.
 
Restrepo look to record the equalizing goal in the 34th minute, but her shot was stopped by Owen – the keeper's only save of the evening.  In the closing seconds of the first half, Restrepo's corner kick found FMU junior forward Faith Allen, but her shot attempt was blocked by a Lander player.
 
Lander scored its final goal at 79:06 when Moosbrugger assisted Gracie Beeson.
 
Lander outshot FMU 12-8 and held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
 
FMU sophomore goalkeeper Makayla Willets finished with three saves.
