Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Patriots advance to title match with 2-0 win over Crusaders

FLORENCE, SC – Senior Mauricio Castorino netted the winning score in the 59th minute as top-seeded Francis Marion University blanked eighth-seeded Belmont Abbey College 2-0, Friday morning (Nov. 12) in the semifinals of the 2021 Conference Carolinas Men's Soccer Tournament.

The Patriots improve to 12-4-2 and advance to Sunday's championship match at 1 p.m. against the Chowan University/University of Mount Olive winner.  The tournament is being held at the Florence Soccer Complex.

The winning sequence came at 58:35 as the Patriots built out of the back. Sebastian Garcia dribbled to midfield and fed Jafet Santiago on the left side.  Santiago played give and go with Javier Bello and then Santiago crossed the ball from just outside the box on the left sideline.  Castorino received the ball 17 yards out in the middle of the penalty area and nailed a shot into the upper right-side netting of the Crusader goal.

Bello nearly doubled the margin at 64:06, but his turn and shoot attempt from 18 yards out was wide right of the goal.

FMU did add an insurance score with 17 seconds left when sophomore Pablo Gil scored on a 43-yard shot into an empty goal.  Belmont Abbey goalkeeper Ben Knust had come forward in the final minute as the Crusaders were awarded a free kick deep in the FMU defensive end and a resulting corner kick.

Francis Marion outshot Belmont Abbey 10-7, including 6-2 in shots on target.  Both squads earned three corner kicks.

FMU sophomore goalkeeper Noah Craig, making his first career start, registered the shutout as he made two saves – both in the opening 45 minutes.  The Patriots held Belmont Abbey to only four second-half shots, none of which were on frame.  The clean sheet was the ninth of the season for FMU.

Knust finished with four saves.
