FMU Men can’t cool down red-hot Bearcats

GREENWOOD, SC - The Francis Marion men's basketball team ran into a hot-shooting Lander University team on Wednesday night (Jan. 13) at Finis Horne Arena. Deon Berrien, Sidney Robinson, and Zane Rankin combined for 53 points, including 12 buckets from beyond the three-point arc, to lead the Bearcats past the Patriots 90-79.

Francis Marion (1-2, 1-2) will play at the University of North Georgia on Saturday at 6 p.m.  The Patriots' next home game will be Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m. against USC Aiken.

Senior Holden Redparth logged another career night as he led the Patriots with 25 points, eight rebounds, and four assists. He currently ranks No.5 in the Peach Belt Conference in scoring, and second in three-point field goals made per game.

Junior swingman Langston Gaither was next among Patriots scorers with 22 points and five rebounds. He ranks No.2 in the PBC in scoring, and has notched at least 20 points in all three contests this season. Sophomore forward Darius Dawson also recorded a career night registering 15 points and eight rebounds.

Lander (4-3, 2-1) opened up the game with the first basket and got hot from three-point range quickly, taking an early 8-4 lead. Francis Marion immediately responded with a 6-0 run to give the Patriots their first lead of the game. Both teams battled back-and-forth before the Bearcats answered back with a 7-0 run to give Lander an 18-15 lead with 13:25 left. The Patriots battled back to get a 24-22 lead, but Lander got hot from three-point land and closed out the half on a 29-11 run to enter the locker room up 16 (51-35).

Despite a strong start to come out of the locker room the Patriots couldn't overcome the first-half deficit, while the Bearcats continued to connect with the long ball.  Altogether, Lander shot 14-of-37 from beyond the arc.

Berrien led Lander with a 25-point, 10-rebound double-double.
