AUGUSTINE, FL – Sophomore 5-10 center Zaria Woods scored a career-high 27 points, hauled down a career-high equaling 18 rebounds, and helped Francis Marion University hold off a late Flagler College rally to claim a 79-73 road win, Saturday afternoon (Feb. 29) in Peach Belt Conference women's play.
Francis Marion concludes its regular season 14-12 overall and tied for fifth in the PBC standings with a 10-10 mark. The Patriots will be the sixth seed in next week's PBC Tournament and will travel to Clayton State University for a quarterfinal contest on Wednesday night.
Woods was near perfect from the floor, nailing 12-of-16 shots and all three of her free throws. She also handed out three assists. Junior forward Kiana Adderton scored 16 points, dished out seven assists, and grabbed five rebounds, while junior guard Macy Passmore added a career-high 12 points and freshman Scarlett Gilmore 11.
Rayven Wade paced Flagler with 26 points, eight rebounds, six steals.
Francis Marion exploded for 25 points, and an 11-point lead, in the opening period, thanks to 7-of-11 shooting, including 4-of-5 three-point attempts. The margin would swell to 21 points in the second quarter before the Patriots gathered in the locker room at halftime holding a 46-26 advantage.
A lay-in by Adderton with 4:42 left in the third quarter gave FMU its largest lead at 58-32. Flagler trimmed the margin to 63-49 heading to the fourth period.
The Saints got to within 71-67 with 2:29 remaining, but a jumper in the paint and two free throws from Gilmore and a free throw by junior guard Camryn Johnson restored the Patriot lead to 76-67 with under a minute to play.
Francis Marion shot 49.1 percent from the floor, including 7-of-19 shots beyond the arc, and made 18-of-25 free throws. Flagler was held to 42.4 percent shooting (only 3-of-16 on three-point attempts), and the Saints hit 14-of-22 from the foul line. The Patriots also held a 41-31 rebounding advantage.
