Bobcats defeat FMU 6-1 in PBC opener

Box Score

MILLEDGEVILLE, GA – Unbeaten Georgia College scored three runs in the third and added three key insurance runs in the eighth to record a 6-1 victory over Francis Marion University, Friday night (Feb. 14) in Peach Belt Conference baseball play.

Francis Marion drops to 4-4 and 0-1 in the PBC, while Georgia College improves to 8-0 and 4-0. The two squads will play game two of the three-game series on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Francis Marion registered seven hits and four of them were doubles, by junior third baseman Todd Mattox, junior first baseman Darius Nobles, freshman left fielder Jon-Mitchell Carter, and freshman pinch hitter Austin Moore.

Trailing 3-0 in the eighth, FMU placed runners on second and third with only one out, but could not score.  After the Bobcats added their three insurance tallies, the Patriots plated a run on a one-out RBI-single to center by freshman pinch hitter Jake Benoit.  However, the next two batters were retired leaving the bases loaded and ending the FMU rally.

Francis Marion senior left-hander Josh Bobrowski (1-2) pitched well, but suffered the loss.  He surrendered only three runs (two earned) on three hits in seven innings, while fanning six.

Georgia College starter Kyle King (2-0) tossed seven shutout frames.  Bobcat shortstop Cassius Young was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a run driven in.
