Box Score AMERICUS, GA – Sophomore center Zaria Woods posted her second consecutive double-double with 20 points and 16 rebounds and Francis Marion University held Georgia Southwestern State University to only four made field goals in the first half as the Patriots claimed a 66-57 road win, Monday afternoon (Jan. 20) in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action.
The Patriots will return home to host Georgia College on Wednesday (Jan. 22) at 5:30 p.m. and then Flagler College on Saturday (Jan. 25) at 1:30 p.m.
Woods connected on 9-of-15 field goal attempts en route to her game-high point total. Junior forward Kiana Adderton registered 15 points, while grabbing eight rebounds and handing out a team-high four assists. Freshman guard Scarlett Gilmore also added 10 points for her fifth straight double-digit effort.
Georgia Southwestern was led by reserve Jamesha Samuel with 14 points and Mariya Trimble with 11 points and eight rebounds.
A pair of three-pointers by Gilmore helped FMU open the contest with a 13-0 run as the Patriots held the Hurricanes scoreless for the opening 6:01. A three-pointer by junior Macy Passmore upped the Francis Marion to 19-2 and the Patriots would close the quarter holding a 24-9 lead.
Woods converted a lay-up off a feed from Adderton to give FMU its largest lead, 30-11, with 7:36 left before intermission. Francis Marion owned a 36-21 advantage at halftime as the Patriot defense held Georgia Southwestern to 4-of-29 shooting over the first 20 minutes.
GSW trimmed the lead to 48-40 after three quarters, but another lay-in by Woods restored the lead to 13 points at 54-41 with 7:12 remaining. The Hurricanes rallied to cut the deficit to 60-55, but a bucket by Woods and two free throws each by junior guard Camryn Johnson and Adderton all in the final minute sealed the victory.
Francis Marion shot 44.2 percent from the floor and made 16-of-21 free throws, while Georgia Southwestern was held to 25 percent shooting while hitting 19-of-28 free throws.
