Box Score CHARLOTTE, NC – Francis Marion University was victorious in the second set, but Queens University of Charlotte rallied to win each of the next two sets to claim a four-set (25-20, 21-25, 25-21, 25-19) victory over the Patriots, Tuesday night (Sept. 20) in non-conference volleyball action.
Francis Marion (6-5) will play host to Columbus State University at 7 p.m. on Friday as the Patriots celebrate FMU Organization, Summer Campers, and High School Night in the Smith University Center. Admission is free.
The Patriots would combine for 15 kills in the second set, and hit .268 as a team. FMU would jump out to a 9-4 lead after a kill by freshman middleblocker Lenee' Blot. The Royals tied the set at 19-19, but the Patriots would finish on a 6-2 run and take the set after a kill by junior libero Shelbi Meek.
Senior middleblocker Caroline Boone paced FMU with 15 kills, while freshman Natalie Vaughn registered 16 digs. Meek dug up 27 balls, while sophomore setter Carrie McGinnis guided the Patriot offense and totaled 40 assists and 16 digs.
Rebecca Cochran led Queens (6-3) with 14 kills and 21 digs, while Sydney Kunz dished out 34 assists and dug up 12 balls. Meredith Jones tallied 14 kills and 14 digs for the Royals.
The Patriots tied the fourth set on two separate occasions (8-8, 12-12), but a quick 5-1 spurt by the Royals would give them a 17-13 advantage. A 4-0 run would clinch the deciding set for Queens after FMU had closed to within 21-19.
