Box Score GREENWOOD, SC – Francis Marion University took an early lead, but undefeated Lander University rallied to claim a four-set (21-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-20) victory on Friday night (Sept. 16) in the Peach Belt Conference volleyball opener for both squads.
Francis Marion (6-3, 0-1) sees its six-match winning streak snapped. The Patriots will continue their Palmetto State road trip by playing at USC Aiken on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Senior Carlie Smith paced FMU with 14 kills and 18 digs, while senior Caroline Boone added nine kills and three blocks. Sophomore Georgia Garrison registered eight kills and 17 digs, while freshman Natalie Vaughn and junior libero Shelbi Meek both dug up 16 balls.
Sophomore setter Carrie McGinnis directed the Patriot offense and compiled 33 assists and 10 digs.
FMU hit .300 as a team in the opening set with 16 kills and only four attack errors. However, the Patriots hit only .082 over the final three sets.
Halle Dotson led Lander (9-0, 1-0) with 14 kills, while Sophia Perkins dished out 23 assists and dug up 12 balls.
