Box Score FLORENCE, SC – Sophomore catcher William Robbins pounded out four hits, scored four times, and drove in five runs to help power 15th-ranked Francis Marion University to a 28-9 victory over the College of Saint Rose, Saturday afternoon (Feb. 27) in collegiate baseball action.
Francis Marion ups its season mark to 12-2, while Saint Rose drops to 0-6. Earlier Saturday, 14th-ranked Millersville defeated Saint Rose 14-3. FMU and Millersville will conclude the weekend's play with a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
In addition to Robbins' 4-for-5 day, junior shortstop Antonio Pino was 4-for-6 with two doubles and three RBIs and junior infielder Zach Callahan was 4-for-5 with a double, four runs scored, and two drive in. Francis Marion tallied 25 hits with 10 different Patriots registering a hit.
FMU batted around and plated six runs in the bottom of the first with Robbins, a Rock Hill native, highlighting the frame with a two-run single to left field.
An RBI double to right center by freshman Cole Hinnant upped the FMU margin to 7-0 in the second. However, Saint Rose rallied with four runs in the third inning – albeit two of which were unearned – to trim the deficit to 7-4 and knocked Patriot senior right-hander Fernando Pinillos from the game.
A two-out, two-run double by Pino and a Golden Knight error extended the Patriot advantage back to 10-4 in the bottom of the third. Run-scoring doubles by Callahan and sophomore first baseman Zach Paquette and a two-run homer to left centerfield by Robbins pushed margin to 14-4 in the fourth frame.
FMU scored 11 runs on seven hits in the eighth inning. Reserve junior outfielder Chase Haas recorded both an RBI-single and RBI-double as the Patriots sent 16 batters to the plate.
Hinnant (1-0) relieved Pinillos in the third and pitched 4.1 innings to earn his first collegiate win. He allowed one run on four hits with three strikeouts.
Saint Rose starter Tyler Childrose (0-2) was the losing pitcher.
FMU senior right fielder JD Crowe went 2-for-5 including a three-run homer over the right field fair/foul pole to extend his streak of safely reaching base to 46 consecutive games.
Francis Marion's run total was the highest since a 27-9 win at Augusta State University on April 19, 2008.
