Browning lights up the Knights in 25-point win

FLORENCE, SC – Junior point guard Detrek Browning scored 32 points and tallied nine rebounds, five steals, and four assists as Francis Marion University cruised to a 103-78 victory over St. Andrews University, Wednesday night (Dec. 14) in non-conference men's basketball action.

Francis Marion evens its record at 4-4.  The Patriots open Peach Belt Conference play on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Georgia Southwestern State University.  The next home game for FMU will be Jan. 5 against the University of Montevallo.

Browning, who established his career-high of 33 points in FMU's last outing, connected on 12-of-18 field goal attempts, including 5-of-9 three-pointers, while playing only 30 minutes.  He pushed his career point total to 1,234, which is 14th on the Patriot career scoring list.

Junior forward Judah Alexander scored 17 points and senior center Kenny Jackson 10 as 11 of the 12 Patriots scored.

Freshman guard Zach Boggs led the Knights (3-9) with 26 points coming off the bench.  Prior to Wednesday, he had hit on 18-of-50 three-point attempts through 11 games, but put on a dazzling display with an 8-of-12 performance from long range.  Freshman forward Connor Zinaich added 19 points and five rebounds.

FMU scored the game's opening 10 points and never trailed.  The Knights did pull within 12-10 after a dunk by Zinaich.  Holding a modest five-point advantage at 20-15, Francis Marion used a 16-4 spurt to pull away to a 36-19 lead.  Browning contributed six points to the run and junior forward Warren Specht five.

St. Andrews trimmed the margin to 43-32 with 2:57 left before halftime, but the Patriots closed the stanza on an 11-4 run to go ahead 54-36 at intermission.  FMU shot 61.1 percent from the floor over the opening 20 minutes.

Francis Marion expanded the margin to 20 points early in the second half and was never seriously threatened over the final 20 minutes.  The largest lead was 30 points on two occasions, the final time at 94-64 following a three-pointer by freshman guard Jaquez Smith with 7:24 remaining.

FMU ended the game having connected on 57.1 percent of its field goal attempts, including 10-of-25 from beyond the three-point arc, while St. Andrews shot 44.1 percent and was 14-of-27 from long distance.  Francis Marion was 13-of-24 at the charity stripe, while the Knights were a perfect 12-of-12.

The Patriots outrebounded the Knights 39-27 and held a 20-5 advantage in second-chance points.  FMU also converted 24 Knight turnovers into 36 points.
