Box Score FLORENCE, SC - Senior Caroline Boone and freshman Georgia Garrison combined for 23 kills and a .488 hitting percentage to carry Francis Marion University to a three-set (25-18, 25-21, 25-20) sweep of visiting Lander University, Tuesday night (Nov. 1) in Peach Belt Conference women's volleyball action.
FMU wins its third straight conference match to improve to 14-10 overall and 8-7 in the PBC, only percentage points behind fifth-place Augusta University.
The Patriots play their final home match of the season on Friday at 7 p.m. against UNC Pembroke, a match that was postponed earlier in the season due to Hurricane Matthew.
Boone tallied 12 kills on 19 swings with only two errors, while Garrison had 11 kills in 22 swings with one miss hit. Garrison also notched her 13th double-double of the year with 13 digs.
Freshman middleblocker Lenee' Blot added seven kills and a team-high six blocks. FMU recorded 16 block assists in the match, while holding the Bearcats to a .071 hitting percentage.
Freshman Kaitlyn Ziegelmaier handed out 40 assists, while freshman libero Natalie Vaughn dug up 13 balls. Senior Carlie Smith led FMU with 14 digs.
Khiani Kelly paced Lander (18-9, 6-8) with nine kills, while setters Katie Haake and Sophia Perkins recorded 11 and 10 assists respectively. Libero Kendall Korte compiled 12 digs.
Kills by Boone and junior Erika Hartings, a service ace from Smith, and an attack error by Lander comprised a 4-0 run by the Patriots to complete the 25-18 set-one win. FMU closed out the second set with a 6-2 spurt after Lander had rallied to knot the set at 19-19. That rally had erased an earlier eight-point Francis Marion advantage. Boone had a pair of kills in the decisive run, while Garrison and Ziegelmaier each had one.
An 11-2 run by FMU wiped out a Lander lead in set three and paved the way to 14-7 Patriot advantage. Francis Marion did not allow Lander to get any closer than three points the rest of the match.
