Cold-shooting Patriots fall at UNCP, 75-63

Box Score

PEMBROKE, NC  – Despite a career-high 23 points from senior guard Camille Dash, Francis Marion University shot a season-low 28.6 percent from the floor and fell to UNC Pembroke 75-63, Wednesday night (Jan. 13) in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action.

Francis Marion (13-3, 4-3) will play at Young Harris College on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.  The next home game for the Patriot women will be Monday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. against the University of North Georgia.

Dash connected on 8-of-18 shots, including five three-pointers, and also grabbed five rebounds. Junior guard TeTe Flowers was the only other FMU player to reach double figures as she netted 10 points and six rebounds.  Senior forward Alaysia Watts added eight points and a team-high 13 rebounds.

Senior 5-10 forward Mary Robinson led UNCP (7-7, 2-5) with a career-high 21 points, while hauling down 11 rebounds. Junior 5-11 forward Jonissa Monley registered her second straight double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds.

Francis Marion did connected on nine three-pointers as a team, but was 13-of-45 inside the arc.  FMU did commit a season-low five turnovers and both teams grabbed 44 rebounds, but UNCP led 34-22 in points in the paint.

The Patriots opened the game by hitting four of their first six field goal attempts and led 15-10 after only 5:11.  However, FMU's next bucket came with six seconds left in the first period after UNCP had assumed the lead.  That basket, a lay-in by Kristen Tines, trimmed the margin to 24-19 as the first stanza ended.

UNCP extended its advantage to 33-21 after a layup by Airico Williams with 4:53 remaining before halftime.  Francis Marion responded by scoring 12 straight points, including a trio of three-pointers by Dash, to knot the score at 33-33.  An inside hoop by Williams gave the Braves a 35-33 lead at intermission.

The Braves opened the third period with an 11-0 run to take a 46-33 lead. Francis Marion closed the period with a 7-0 run to draw within 53-49 at the horn.

A jumper by Dash to start the final quarter brought Francis Marion to within 53-51 with 9:11 left in the contest.  After a three-pointer by UNCP, Flowers converted an inside basket to cut the deficit to 56-53 with 7:53 on the clock.  That would be the closest the Patriots would get as UNCP scored five straight to open an eight-point margin.
