Box Score 2 NEWBERRY, SC – Senior Alexzandra Reed and freshman Georgia Garrison each registered eight kills as Francis Marion University swept Lees-McRae College 25-21, 25-22, 25-18 on Saturday evening (Sept. 5) to hand head coach Paul MacDonald his 200th career coaching win. Earlier in the day, FMU lost a marathon five-set match (15-25,25-17,25-16,18-25,15-10) to host Newberry College on the final day of the season-opening Newberry Invitational Tournament.
Francis Marion improves to 3-1 and will return to Florence to host the annual FMU Invitational Tournament on Friday and Saturday in the Smith University Center. The Patriots will play their first contest at 4 p.m. on Friday against the University of Mount Olive.
In his 13th season as a college head coach – the last 10 at Francis Marion – MacDonald has posted a 200-183 mark.
In the win over the Bobcats (0-4), Garrison also led the Patriots with 17 digs. Junior 6-2 middleblocker Caroline Boone added six service aces, five kills, and three blocks. Sophomore libero Shelbi Meek recorded 11 digs, while junior setter Samantha Hinrichs and freshman setter Carrie McGinnis delivered 15 and 14 assists respectively.
Against Newberry, Garrison recorded 17 kills and 15 digs, while hitting .316. Junior Carlie Smith tallied 11 kills and five blocks, while Reed added 10 kills and a team-high 19 digs. Boone had a team-high seven blocks, while Meek dug up 17 balls.
McGinnis and Hinrichs dished out 28 and 16 assists respectively, with Hinrichs also reaching double-digits in digs with 10. McGinnis served three aces.
