Box Score 2 NEWBERRY, SC – Junior Carlie Smith and freshman Georgia Garrison each combined for 21 kills as Francis Marion University won its season-opening two matches on Friday (Sept. 4) at the Newberry College Tournament. The Patriots defeated Belmont Abbey College 25-23, 10-25, 25-20, 25-22 in the afternoon and returned to the court later in the evening to down Mars Hill University 25-21, 23-25, 25-21, 25-16.
The Patriots will continue play in the tournament on Saturday by facing the host Wolves at 1 p.m. and Lees-McRae College at 7 p.m. With 199 coaching victories, FMU head coach Paul MacDonald will be searching for his 200th career win when the Patriots take the court on Saturday.
Francis Marion began its season by hitting .308 as a team to capture the opening set against Belmont Abbey. After dropping the second set, FMU recovered to sweep the next two sets.
Garrison led the Patriots with 12 kills, eight digs, and three blocks, while senior Alexzandra Reed tallied 11 kills, 10 digs, and three blocks. Smith added 10 kills and junior middleblocker Caroline Boone had nine kills and four blocks.
The setting tandem of freshman Carrie McGinnis and junior Samantha Hinrichs handed out 27 and 19 assists respectively. Sophomore libero Shelbi Meek dug up a team-high 14 balls.
In the nightcap against Mars Hill, Smith registered 11 kills and three blocks, while Boone added 10 kills, three blocks, and three service aces. Garrison recorded nine kills and 17 digs.
Reed nearly produced her second double-double of the day with nine kills and 11 digs, while sophomore Kadeeja Griffin had seven kills with only one attack error in 13 hits to go along with seven blocks.
Hinrichs and McGinnis each handed out 23 assists with Hinrichs digging up 16 balls and McGinnis 10. Meek led FMU with 19 digs.
