Patriots rebound with 3-1 win at Flagler

Box Score

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL – Senior Alexzandra Reed and junior Carlie Smith combined for 27 kills to lead Francis Marion University to a 14-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-22 road win at Flagler College, Saturday afternoon (Sept. 26) in Peach Belt Conference women's volleyball action.

The Patriots rebounded from a Friday night loss to pre-season favorite Armstrong State University to improve to 9-4 overall – equaling their win total from all of 2014 – and to 3-2 in the Peach Belt. Francis Marion will play host to local PBC rival UNC Pembroke on Friday at 7 p.m. in the Smith University Center.

Reed tallied 14 kills, 11 digs, and two service aces, while Smith pounded out 13 kills with only one attack error in 22 total swings – a .545 hitting percentage.  Reed now had four double-doubles this year and stands only 30 kills shy of 1,000 for her career.  Senior Emily Sears came off the Patriot bench and added eight kills with a .353 hitting percentage.

Junior setter Samantha Hinrichs (24) and freshman setter Carrie McGinnis (19) combined for 43 assists.  Hinrichs also dug up 11 balls to post her third double-double of the season.  Sophomore libero Shelbi Meek led FMU defensively with 16 digs.

Sara Davis led Flagler (8-3, 1-1) with 19 kills and four blocks, while Megan Hooks recorded 16 kills.  Setter Tara Savisky handed out 46 assists and dug up 17 balls, while Caitlyn Hooks registered a match-high 23 digs.

After committing seven attack errors in dropping the first set, FMU made only six bad hits over the next two sets combined.  A pair of service aces by Reed helped the Patriots snap a 20-20 deadlock in set two and Smith clinched that set with an attack that forced a blocking error by the Saints.  A kill by Reed – with Hinrichs providing the assist – clinched set three, and kills by freshman Georgia Garrison and junior Caroline Boone helped FMU take control late in the fourth and final set.
