Bobcats sweep Francis Marion on the diamond

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILLEDGEVILLE, GA – Cameron Busby pitched a complete-game eight-hitter allowing Georgia College to take a 6-1 win over Francis Marion University and complete a sweep of Saturday's (April 4) Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader.  The Bobcats rallied with a four-run seventh inning to claim an 8-5 win in game one.

The Patriots drop to 22-12 overall and 11-8 in the PBC, but remain in fifth place, while Georgia College improves to 20-14 and 9-9.

Francis Marion will return home to host Claflin University on Tuesday at 6 p.m. for Francis Marion Recreation Department Night

In the opener, FMU took its first lead of the game in the top of the seventh when junior outfielder Shuler Ward launched a two-run homer over the left field fence.  However, the Bobcats rallied back in their half of the frame and scored four times to go ahead for good – three of the tallies came with two outs.

That rally chased FMU senior righty Jordy Santak (2-3) who had entered the game in the bottom of the fifth in relief of lefty starter Daniel Barfield.  Three Patriot hurlers fanned eight Bobcat batters, but also walked five – three of which would eventually come around to score. Five wild pitches also hurt the Patriot cause.

Junior third baseman Randy Loew led FMU at the plate with a 3-for-4 effort and two runs scored.  In addition to Shuler's two RBIs, sophomore shortstop Zach Callahan also drove home two with an RBI groundout and a run-scoring double.

Francis Marion senior Matt Rubino went hitless in four at bats to end his 22-game hitting streak.

Georgia College reliever Jordan Brooks (3-0) was the beneficiary of the seventh-inning comeback, while Chris Gammon earned his fifth save by tossing a scoreless ninth inning.

The Bobcats led 3-1 after three innings, but Francis Marion clawed back to knot the score at 3-3 on Callahan's RBI double to right center in the fifth.  George College answered with a run in the last of the fifth to take a 4-3 advantage setting the stage for Shuler's blast in the seventh.

Georgia College was led at the plate by second baseman Dylan Cook (3-for-5) and center fielder Jake Sandlin (2-for-5, 2 RBIs).

The Bobcats scored once in the opening inning of game two and twice in the second frame to take an early 3-0 advantage. Busby (2-2) silenced the Patriots for the most part as he struck out 11 batters and did not issue a walk. He retired the final 10 Francis Marion batters in order.

FMU junior right-hander Ty Simpson started game two and was tagged with the loss as he surrendered five runs (four earned) on seven hits in 4.1 innings.

Junior left fielder JD Crowe went 3-for-4 in the second contest to pace the Patriots. Senior designated hitter Chandler Smetana was 2-for-4 and drove home the lone Patriot run in the fourth inning with a two-out single to left.

The tally cut the deficit to 3-1, but the Bobcats added two insurance runs in the fifth and a single run in the seventh.

Shortstop Brandon Benson (3-for-4, RBI) and first baseman Clay Ardeeser (2-for-3, RBI) led the Bobcats at the plate in game two.
