Box Score MONTEVALLO, AL – Despite a combined 49 points from the backcourt trio of Detrek Browning, Mike Davis Jr., and Alante Fenner, Francis Marion University dropped its Peach Belt Conference opener to the University of Montevallo 78-66, Thursday night (Dec. 17) in men's college basketball action.
Francis Marion drops to 7-2 overall and 0-1 in the PBC. FMU will conclude its conference-opening road trip on Saturday with a 3:30 p.m. contest at Clayton State University.
Browning led the Patriots with 18 points, 16 of which came in the second half, while Davis Jr. added 17 (14 in the second half) and Fenner 14, twelve of which came in the opening half. Sophomore 6-7 forward Judah Alexander scored six points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Terrell Lipkins and Bryant Orange led Montevallo (5-3, 1-0) with 18 points apiece.
Montevallo used a 16-0 run midway through the first half to break open a tight game and take a 26-9 advantage. The Patriots were held scoreless for more than five minutes, missing seven shots and committing four turnovers.
The Falcons' lead grew to 18 points at 39-21, but Francis Marion scored the final seven points of the half to trim the deficit to 39-28 at intermission.
A 17-6 spurt by the Patriots to begin the second stanza forged a 45-45 tie after a lay-in by Davis Jr. The Falcons would push ahead by five points, but again FMU rallied to knot the score, this time at 56-56 following a lay-up by Browning. Both teams traded three-pointers to leave the score deadlocked with 5:49 remaining.
Montevallo took the lead for good with an 11-3 spurt. FMU responded with buckets by Alexander and Browning to draw to within 70-66 with 2:12 left, but those would be the Patriots' final points of the contest.
Francis Marion connected on 41.5 percent of its field goal attempts, but was sonly 10-of-32 from behind the arc, and was just 2-of-3 at the foul line. The Falcons shot 50.8 percent from the field, were 7-of-18 from three-point territory, and 7-of-10 at the free throw line.
