Box Score PEMBROKE, NC – Francis Marion University fought off a pair of match points to even the contest at two-sets apiece, but UNC Pembroke closed the fifth set with a 3-0 run to claim a 28-26, 18-25, 25-19, 28-30, 15-11 win, Wednesday evening (Nov. 11) in Peach Belt Conference women's volleyball action.
Francis Marion (14-13, 7-9) will conclude its regular-season schedule with a pair of home matches this weekend: Senior Night against the University of Montevallo on Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. against Columbus State University.
Senior middleblocker Caroline Boone led FMU with 16 kills and six blocks, while junior Carlie Smith tallied 13 kills, 19 digs, and six blocks. Freshman Georgia Garrison added 10 kills and 13 digs.
Freshman Carrie McGinnis handed out 24 assists, while junior Samantha Hinrichs dished out 23. Sophomore libero Shelbi Meek recorded 29 digs for the second consecutive match, while freshman Emily Stanley aided the Patriot defense with a season-high 11 digs off the bench.
Nicole Mathews led UNCP (8-22, 3-12) with 14 kills and 27 digs. Setters Bailee Jones and Alicia Paeplow registered 29 and 28 assists respectively. Ka'Asha Jefferies posted a match-high 32 digs.
FMU fought off a pair of match points in set four. The Patriots trailed 28-27, but took advantage of a three UNCP attacking errors – including the final point that was a successful block by Smith and Kadeeja Griffin – to even the match with a 30-28 victory. In the fifth and deciding set, FMU pulled to within 12-11 after a kill by Boone, but the Braves rattled off the final three points to end the match.
