Box Score GREENWOOD, SC - Francis Marion University closed the match with a 6-1 run to come from behind and capture a 3-2 (17-25, 25-20, 14-25, 25-23, 15-11) road win at Lander University, Wednesday evening (Oct. 28) in Peach Belt Conference women's volleyball action.
FMU improves to 14-10 overall and 7-6 in the PBC, while earning a season-split with the Bearcats. Lander, which slips to 20-9 and 8-5, defeated the Patriots in five sets earlier this season in Florence.
Francis Marion was paced by senior
Alexzandra Reed with 15 kills and 22 digs, while junior middleblocker
Caroline Boone registered 14 kills and seven blocks. Junior
Carlie Smith tallied 13 kills and 20 digs, while setters Carrie McGinnis (24 assists, 10 digs), Samantha Hinrichs (19 assists) combined for 43 assists.
Sophomore libero Shelbi Meek dug up a team-high 28 ball, and freshman Georgia Garrison had13 digs and sophomore Kadeeja Griffin joined Garrison with four blocks each.
Julia Ferreira-Alves had 13 kills and 19 digs for Lander, while Sophia Perkins had 20 assists and 11 digs. Halle Dotson added 11 kills, Khiani Kelly 11 kills, Ali Kirk 27 assists, Kendall Korte nine kills and 20 digs, and Mallory Taylor 33 digs. Reyonia Whipple led the Bearcats in blocks with one solo and eight assists.
Francis Marion will continue its four-match road swing with a Nov. 6 contest at Georgia College. The next home match for the Patriots will be Nov. 13 against the University of Montevallo.
Trailing 11-9 in the decisive fifth set, FMU got kills from Smith, McGinnis, and Boone, while taking advantage of a Bearcat serving mistake and two attack errors (one forced by blocks from Boone and Smith). Twice in the match, Francis Marion rallied from a set down to even the match. In the fourth set, needing a win, the Patriots used a pair of kills from Reed and one from Hinrichs to snap a 22-22 deadlock.
