Broman's hat trick powers Patriots to 5-2 win

Box Score

SALISBURY, NC – Freshman Julius Broman scored three times in his collegiate debut to power Francis Marion University to a 5-2 victory over Newberry College in the opening match of the Catawba College Men's Soccer Tournament on Thursday evening (Sept. 4).

Francis Marion (1-0-0) will play the host Indians on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. to conclude the four-match event.  FMU opens its 2014 campaign with the program's highest season-opening goal total in 35 years dating back to a 7-1 win over Pembroke State University that started the 1979 season.

Broman recorded the team's first hat trick in seven years dating back to Willie Hunt's three-goal performance against Georgia Southwestern State University on September 15, 2007.

FMU junior Sven Ricke, who ranked 40th nationally last season in assists per match, produced a pair of helpers on Thursday.

Francis Marion outshot Newberry 17-8 and held a slight 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.  Patriot sophomore goalkeeper Mike Warn, making his second career start, notched three saves.  The FMU outburst came at the expense of Newberry goalkeeper Nick Lucido, who recorded five saves.  Lucido spent his freshman year minding net for the Patriots in 2011.

Broman gave Francis Marion a 1-0 advantage when he headed in a Ricke corner kick at the 7:33 mark.  The first half would end deadlocked at 2-2 thanks to a three-goal flurry in a span of 3:15 midway through the stanza.  Two Newberry goals were sandwiched around a score by Patriot sophomore Shahin Hemat, again aided by a Ricke assist.

Broman put Francis Marion ahead to stay when he scored on a Tom Gillette assist in the 66th minute.  FMU junior David Sheridan scored an unassisted tally in the 80th minute following a poor Newberry clearance, and Broman finished the Patriot scoring with his third goal at the 82:25 mark, thanks to assists from Hemat and freshman Jayden Doyle.
