Box Score 2 AIKEN, SC – Francis Marion University finished its play at
the USC Aiken Volleyball Tournament on Saturday (Sept. 13), losing
twice: in four sets (25-20, 23-25, 25-17, 25-21) to Lees-McRae
College and in three sets (25-20, 25-23, 26-24) to Newberry
College.
Francis Marion drops to 2-6. The Patriots return home to
host USC Aiken in their Peach Belt Conference opener on Friday at 7
p.m. in the Smith University Center. The match is billed as Crazy
Patriot Night.
In FMU's opening match on Saturday, junior Alexzandra
Reed led the Patriots with a career-high 27 kills with a .345
hitting percentage. Senior setter Sloane Shank
handed out 27 assists and recorded 10 digs, while freshman Sarah Cushing
tallied 12 assists and 10 digs. Junior libero Jessica Amador led
the Patriots with 16 digs.
Reed was named to the second-team All-Tournament Team for the
efforts in the two-day event.
Trailing two sets to one and in the fourth set, FMU tied the
score at 10-10. Lees-McRae scored the next four points, but
the Patriots again rallied to knot the count at 18-18. The
Bobcats (4-3) answered with two points and never trailed again.
Reed again led FMU in the contest with Newberry as she pounded
out 17 kills and dug up 10 balls. Shank dished out 31 assists,
while Amador registered 13 digs.
Francis Marion held a 23-21 lead late in set two, but the
Indians ran off the final four points. The third set was tied at
19-19, 21-21, 22-22, and 24-24, before Newberry registered the
final two points.
