Box Score 2 AIKEN, SC – Junior Alexzandra Reed registered a combined 23 kills, but a short-handed Francis Marion University squad dropped a pair of matches on Friday (Sept. 12) at the USC Aiken Volleyball Tournament.
Due to several injuries, FMU (2-4) dressed only eight players as the Patriots faced a pair of unbeaten opponents. Palm Beach Atlantic University (6-0) beat Francis Marion 26-24, 25-12, 25-15 and Anderson University (4-0) downed the Patriots 25-23, 25-13, 25-18.
FMU will play twice on Saturday: against Lees-McRae College at 10 a.m. and Newberry College at 2 p.m.
Reed tallied 15 kills and seven digs against PBAU, while senior setter Sloane Shank handed out 18 assists and freshman Sarah Cushing recorded 10 assists and 12 digs. Junior libero Jessica Amador paced the Patriots with 14 digs.
The Patriots held a 22-19 lead in the opening set following a kill by freshman Meagan Fajman, but the Sailfish rallied for the 26-24 win and then cruised through sets two and three.
In the match against Anderson, Reed had eight kills, while Cushing dished out 15 assists and dug up six balls. Shank added seven assists, four kills, and 11 digs.
Again, FMU held a late lead (20-19) in the opening set, but saw the Trojans rally for the late win. The Patriots led only briefly in the early goings of sets two and three.
