Box Score 2 Montevallo, Ala. (April 3, 2014) – Every Patriot batter registered at least one hit in Francis Marion University's 8-2 victory over the University of Montevallo on Saturday afternoon in the second game of a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader. The Falcons won the first game 6-2.
FMU improves to 19-17 overall for the season and 7-13 in PBC play. The rubber match of the series will take place on Sunday morning at 11 a.m. eastern time. The game was moved up from the 1 p.m. start due to the threat of rain in the Montevallo, Ala., area.
In the second contest, senior righty Brandon Stoots (1-1) took home the victory on the mound after striking out three batters and giving up two earned runs in seven innings of work. Montevallo (22-16, 10-13) pitcher Cody Huges (2-4) was saddled with the loss after giving up five earned runs on seven hits.
Senior shortstop Michael Wilson kicked the game off in dramatic fashion with a solo homer in the top of the first inning. Senior designated hitter Dalton Gress hit an RBI single through the left side of the infield in the top of the fourth inning to put the Patriots up 2-0. Junior infielder Brett Fulmer also had an RBI single in the frame to give FMU a 3-0 lead after four innings.
The Patriots gave themselves a healthy advantage with a three-run fifth inning to go up 7-0. Gress hit his second RBI single of game to score Wilson for the Patriots' seventh run. Montevallo's Matthew Haskins did hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh, but the Patriots quickly got both runs back in the top of the eighth to earn the six-run victory.
Wilson was 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and three runs scored. Gress was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while junior catcher Nicholas McGee had two hits and two RBIs. Fulmer and junior outfielder Zac Lenns were both 1-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI.
Senior third baseman Luke Tollison hit his second homer of the season, but Montevallo won the first contest 6-2. Senior righty Jeffrey Stoner (1-2) took the loss after allowing three earned runs on five hits in two innings out of the bullpen. The Falcons' Alex Pondick (4-3) earned the win after striking out four batters and limiting FMU to just one run in seven innings on the mound.
FMU held a 1-0 lead after Tollison's homer in the top of the sixth inning, but Montevallo scored six unanswered runs in the next three innings to take a five-run advantage. The Patriots struck for a run in the top of a ninth on an RBI double by senior first baseman David DeWolfe, but Montevallo held on for the victory.
Gress and DeWolfe both recorded two base hits in the second contest, while Tollison was 1-for-2 with an RBI and two walks.
Haskins led Montevallo with three hits in four trips to the plate and two RBIs. Brandon Marshall was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Jackson Slaid was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
