Patriots defeat GRU Augusta 10-1 in series finale

Augusta, Ga. (April 20, 2014) – Senior righty Spencer Jordan pitched six innings and gave up just one earned run and the Francis Marion University baseball team defeated Peach Belt Conference foe GRU Augusta 10-1 on Sunday afternoon at Lake Olmstead Stadium at Auguata, Ga.

The Patriots took two of the three games against the Jaguars to improve to 25-20 overall and 15-12 in PBC play. FMU will return to the field on Thursday, May 1 to kick off a three-game series against Young Harris University at Sparrow Stadium.

Jordan (3-4) tallied four strikeouts against eight hits to earn the victory on the mound. GRU Augusta (17-29, 10-16) pitcher Frank Warren (3-4) took the loss in just two innings of work in which he gave up two earned runs on four hits. Fellow Patriot senior righty Jeffrey Stoner (5 saves) earned the save after allowing just one hit in three innings of work out of the bullpen.

At the plate, senior third baseman Luke Tollison finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Junior outfielder Zac Lenns tallied three RBIs on just one hit, while junior infielder Connor Wessel tacked on two RBIs on two hits. Senior shortstop Michael Wilson added two hits in five trips to the plate, while senior outfielder Isaac Davenport recorded an RBI on a hit with a run scored.

An RBI double in the top of the first inning by Tollison gave the Patriots an early 1-0 lead. FMU added two runs in the top of the second and the third innings to take a 3-0 advantage. Davenport recorded an RBI single in the top of the second, while senior outfielder Marquis Curry singled home a run in the top of the third.

After GRU scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, Lenns cleared the bases on an RBI single in the top of the sixth to put the score at 6-1. Lenns later scored on an error by the Jags' infield to make the score 7-1 heading to the bottom of the sixth inning.

FMU added three runs in the top of the ninth inning to make the final tally 10-1. Wessel hit a two-RBI single, while junior catcher Nicholas McGee hit an RBI single to score Curry to give the Patriots the nine-run victory.

GRU Augusta was led at the plate by Hunter Boss, who had three base knocks an and RBI. JB Sabo finished with a hit and a run scored, while Ryan Khan, Connor Gilbert, and Ross Miles finished 1-for-4 at the plate.
