Box Score Florence, S.C. (April 13, 2014) – Despite a double and a solo home run by senior third baseman Luke Tollison, Francis Marion University fell 5-3 to No. 30 UNC Pembroke Sunday afternoon in the final game of a Peach Belt Conference baseball series from Sparrow Stadium.
FMU slips to 22-19 overall and 8-15 in PBC play. The Patriots will return to action on Wednesday, April 16 in a non-conference road contest at Pfeiffer University. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
Senior righty Spencer Jordan (2-4) was hit with the loss despite a solid six and a third innings of work on the mound with five strikeouts, just two earned runs and two walks. UNCP (30-13, 15-9) starter Andy Sullivan (5-1) earned the win after throwing eight innings on the mound with just three earned runs on seven hits. Braves' reliever Jordan DeLoatch earned the save (2).
At the plate, Tollison finished 2-for-4 with two runs batted in and extended his hitting streak to 14 games. Senior shortstop Michael Wilson was also 2-for-4 and tallied an RBI and a run scored, while senior outfielder Isaac Davenport recorded two base knocks and scored a run.
Both squads opened the game with a pair of runs in each half of the first inning. An RBI double by Wilson scored Davenport, who had a leadoff single. Wilson scored on an RBI double by Tollison down the left field line.
Both pitchers put up zeros on the scoreboard for the next five innings, and saw an impressive catch at the warning track in left field by FMU senior outfielder Marquis Curry in the top of the sixth. UNCP broke the 2-2 deadlock on an RBI walk by Josh Edgerton in the top of the seventh.
The Braves tacked on two runs in the top of the ninth inning on a two-RBI single by Edgerton to go up 5-2. Tollison led off the bottom of the ninth with his fourth homer of the season, and senior designated hitter Dalton Gress hit a single up the middle to bring the tying run to the plate. However, a double play in the next at-bat ended the game and sealed the Braves' victory.
Edgerton led the way for UNCP with three RBIs. Ben Schmucker was 2-for-4 at the plate, while Daniel Fraga tallied three base hits and scored two runs.
