Box Score FLORENCE, SC – The University of Mount Olive, the third-highest scoring team in NCAA Division II, pounded out 15 hits en route to an 11-6 non-conference win over Francis Marion University, Tuesday evening (April 1) in college baseball action.
Francis Marion sees its modest four-game winning streak snapped as FMU drops to 17-16. The Patriots will play at Claflin University in Orangeburg on Thursday at 5 p.m. The 27th-ranked Trojans improve to 25-11.
Senior shortstop Michael Wilson led FMU at the plate with a pair of hits, including a two-run homer, while extending his hitting streak to eight contests. His teammate on the left side of the infield, senior third baseman Luke Tollison also registered a pair of hits, including a double.
Patriot pinch-hitter Michael Keels produced an RBI double, while catcher Devin Walker, pinch hitter Connor Wessel, and second baseman Cole Morris all drove in runs with ground outs.
Mount Olive senior outfielder Bradon Reitano was 3-for-6 with a home run and four runs driven in, while senior center fielder Jay Gonzalez was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Reitano ranks fifth in Division II in RBIs, while Gonzalez is second nationally in runs scored.
Francis Marion junior right-hander Randy Morgart (0-2) absorbed the loss as he allowed the first two runs. Trojan righty Jordy Farthing (4-0) remained perfect this season as he pitched into the seventh inning, allowing one run on seven hits with five strikeouts.
Senior righty Austin Cox was the most effective Patriot hurler on Tuesday as he tossed a pair of scoreless frames.
The Trojans scored twice in the first and once in the third, but blew the game open with a four-run sixth inning that was highlighted by Reitano's three-run shot that curled just inside the left field pole. The margin increased to 9-0 in the top of the seventh before Francis Marion rallied with six runs over its final three at bats. The contest drew a crowd of 701 that enjoyed a post-game fireworks show.
FMU senior center fielder Isaac Davenport was 0-for-5 at the plate to end his 12-game hitting streak.
