Box Score 2 SAINT LEO, FL – Senior right-hander Taylor Luff tossed a one-hitter with a career-high 15 strikeouts and she scored the game's only run in a 1-0 win over Nova Southeastern University, Saturday morning (March 8) at the Saint Leo Softball Spring Invitational. Nova Southeastern came back to defeat the Patriots 5-1 later on Saturday to earn a split of the morning/afternoon doubleheader.
FMU (10-8) will return to the diamond on Sunday to play Palm Beach Atlantic University at 1:30 p.m. and then the host school, Saint Leo University, at 3:45 p.m.
Luff (5-5) allowed only a one-out double in the top of the fifth inning, while issuing three walks.
FMU scored the opener's only run in the bottom of the third when Luff reached on a two-out bunt single. She moved to second on a single to left field by outfielder Briana Barzola and came home on senior shortstop Kristie Hanewinckel's RBI single to left field. Hanewinckel finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate.
Nova Southeastern scored an unearned run in the top of the first in the second contest, and eventually built a 5-0 advantage in the top of the sixth. Francis Marion scored its single tally in the bottom of the sixth when Hanewinckel cracked a two-out triple to right field and scampered home on first baseman Ashley Burney's RBI double to right center. Burney was 2-for-3 in game two.
Junior righty Katie Carnes (5-3) took the game-two loss as she allowed the five runs (4 earned) on nine hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
