Box Score FLORENCE, SC – Senior right-hander Spencer Jordan tossed six shutout innings and senior shortstop Michael Wilson laced an RBI double to deep center field to help Francis Marion University to a 2-0 victory over Clarion University, Tuesday evening (March 18) in non-conference baseball action.
The Patriots snap a three-game skid and even their overall record at 12-12, while the Golden Eagles drop to 2-5. The two teams will return to Cormell Field at Sparrow Stadium on Wednesday for a Businessman's Special noon start. Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for students.
Jordan improved to 2-3 as he allowed only three singles and struck out eight while not issuing a walk. Three Patriots relievers followed with one scoreless inning each, with junior righty Jeremy Hatfield earning his fourth save of 2014 with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
FMU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Senior left fielder Marquis Curry walked and advanced to third on a single to right by senior first baseman David DeWolfe. Curry scampered home with an unearned run when the throw from right field to second base was wild.
Francis Marion doubled its margin in the third. Sophomore second baseman Cole Morris reached on a lead-off flare single to shallow center and then came home on Wilson's long two-out double to straightaway center field. Wilson has five doubles in his last three contests.
Senior center fielder Isaac Davenport was the only Patriot with multiple hits as he enjoyed a 2-for-3 night in the leadoff position.
Freshman right-hander Sean White (0-1) went the distance for Clarion, allowing six hits and three walks, while fanning five.
Golden Eagle designated hitter Mike Lockhart was 2-for-3, including a two-out double in the seventh. In that inning, he reached third on a wild pitch, but was stranded there as Jeffrey Stoner struck out left fielder John Finke.
Altogether, FMU hurlers struck out 11 Golden Eagle batters while not walking anyone in a game that lasted only 1:57.
