Box Score FLORENCE, S.C. (February 9, 2014) – Sophomore third baseman JD Crowe struck for three RBIs, and the Francis Marion University baseball team earned a series sweep over the College of Saint Rose with a 7-2 victory Sunday afternoon at Sparrow Stadium.
The Patriots will return to the field next weekend when they host King University in a weekend series. A doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday afternoon starting at 1 p.m., with the final game scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
Junior righty Chris Harrison (1-0) earned the victory on the mound after two perfect innings in relief with a strikeout. Senior right-hander Spencer Jordan started the game, and threw four strong innings with six strikeouts.
Crowe finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a double. Senior first baseman David DeWolfe led the Patriots with three hits, including an RBI triple. Senior center fielder Isaac Davenport also tallied an RBI single.
Saint Rose starter Phillip Zdanowski took the loss on the hill after giving up two earned runs off four hits. Nick Venier hustled out an RBI triple for the Golden Knights, while Scott Hladik recorded an RBI single.
After Saint Rose opened the game with a run in the top of the first, the Patriots evened the score at 1-1 with DeWolfe's RBI triple. Michael Wilson scored the run after hitting a double earlier in the inning.
The Patriots took the lead for good in the bottom half of the third inning off a long double by Crowe that scored Zach Lenns, who reached base earlier on a two-out single.
FMU struck big in the bottom of the fifth with three runs, highlighted by Crowe's two-RBI single that went through the left side of the drawn-in infield. Marquis Curry would later score the third run of the inning off a wild pitch, after he reached base by a hit-by-pitch.
Saint Rose would add another run in the top of the eighth inning from Venier's triple off junior righty Jeremy Hatfield. However, the Patriots would quickly add an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning when Wilson scored on a called balk on Saint Rose reliever Josh Johnson. Davenport added the Patriots final run with his RBI single that scored DeWolfe.
Senior righty Jeffrey Stoner closed the door in the ninth inning by striking out the side. Hatfield tossed two innings of relief, striking out two batters.
As a group, the Patriot pitchers only allowed four hits and three walks, while striking out 12 batters.
