Box Score FLORENCE, SC – Senior shortstop Michael Wilson's two-out two-run bloop single behind third base plated the go-ahead runs as Francis Marion University came from behind to down King University 5-2 on Sunday (Feb. 16) and win the rubber game of a three-game baseball series.
Francis Marion (7-2) will open Peach Belt Conference play on Friday when the Patriots entertain 14th-ranked USC Aiken on Friday at 4 p.m. A fireworks show will follow the game as part of the university's 2014 Homecoming festivities.
Trailing 2-0 entering the last of the fifth inning, FMU scored four times on three hits, two walks, a hit batter, and two Tornado errors. The first tally came across on an infield throwing error. Sophomore third baseman JD Crowe knotted the score with a sacrifice fly to center field. Two batters later, Wilson's flare just over the infield, and in front of a hard-charging left fielder, plated the third and fourth runs. The hit also extended the Florence native's hitting streak to 14 games.
The rally made a winner of Patriot starter Spencer Jordan (1-0), who allowed two runs on four hits in five innings. He struck out two and issued no walks as 50 of his 67 pitches found the strike zone. It was Jordan's first win since 2012 as he missed all of the 2013 campaign with an injury.
Senior righty Jeffrey Stoner pitched a 1-2-3 ninth frame for his third save of 2014 and his 15th career save. Altogether, the FMU bullpen logged four shutout innings, while allowing only one hit.
The Patriots added an insurance tally in the sixth inning. Senior center fielder Isaac Davenport reached on a two-out bunt single and took second on a throwing error. He then scored when Connor Wessel's grounder to short was errored on.
King took a 2-0 advantage in the third inning when center fielder Garrett Cook hit a two-run homer over the left centerfield wall.
Davenport, who extended his hitting streak to 12 games, finished the day 3-for-3 with a pair of walks. Wessel was 2-for-5 with a run scored.
