Box Score St. Augustine, Fla. (Feb. 1, 2014) – Briana Robinson and Dee Gray combined to score 40 points, but Francis Marion fell 81-77 at Flagler, Saturday afternoon in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action.
FMU falls to 10-8 overall and 5-7 in PBC play. The Patriots will return home to face UNC Pembroke on Thursday night at 5:30 p.m.
Robinson, a junior guard, tallied a career-high 22 points to go with six assists and five rebounds. Gray, a senior forward, recorded a double-double with 18 points a game-high 12 rebounds. Junior guard Cy'erra Mills was the third Patriot to finish in double-figure scoring after netting 10 points.
Flagler (9-10, 7-5) had four players in double-figure scoring led by guard Williesha Spencer with 21 points and five assists. Shelbi Lindsey recorded 19 points, while Passhayla Williams led the Saints with 10 rebounds.
After trailing by as many as 15 points in the first half, the Patriots took their first lead of the game at 36-35 off a nice back-door layup by Mills with 18:58 to play in the game. Both squads would trade the lead four times before the Saints saw their advantage sit at 52-47 with 14:21 remaining in the second half.
The Patriots would rally and take a 59-56 lead off the heels of a 12-4 run with 8:35 remaining. However, the game would sit tied at 64-64 with 4:55 to play. After the Saints increased their lead to 73-69 with 1:25 on the clock, Robinson kept the Patriots in the game with a three, and brought the Patriots back within a point.
Camille Dash would tie the game back up at 73-73 on a rare four-point play before the Saints hit a quick 4-0 run to take a 77-73 lead. FMU had one last comeback left, and found itself down by a point with 10 seconds showing on the clock. The Patriots were forced to foul, and Christina Brown converted both free-throws to put the score at 80-77. The Patriots had one last attempt to tie the game for a ninth time, but a steal by Lindsey on the ensuing inbounds play sealed the Saints' victory.
Flagler held a 21-6 lead with 10:48 to play in the first half. However, FMU answered with a 14-6 run and cut the Saint lead to 27-20 at the 5:37 mark of the first half. The Patriots continued to chip into the lead, and trailed 35-32 at the half.
Both squads shot 44 percent from the field, while both teams struggled from three-point range, shooting under 30 percent. The Saints held a 43-35 rebounding advantage. The game featured eight ties and 15 lead changes.
