FMU falls to #20 Pirates in PBC Quarterfinals

SAVANNAH, GA – Eighth-seeded Francis Marion University got 10 kills and four blocks from sophomore middle blocker Caroline Boone, but the Patriots saw their season come to an end with a three-sets-to-none loss (25-15, 25-20, 25-19) to top-seeded and 20-ranked Armstrong State University, Tuesday night (Nov. 11) in a quarterfinal match of the 2014 Peach Belt Conference Volleyball Tournament.

Francis Marion ends its campaign with a 9-20 record.  The Pirates (26-2) will now host the PBC semifinals and finals on Friday and Saturday.

Supporting Boone was junior Alexzandra Reed with eight kills.  Senior setter Sloane Shank, playing her final match as a Patriot, notched 27 assists, while junior libero Jessica Amador led all players defensively with 17 digs and she served three aces.

Two other FMU seniors also concluded their collegiate careers: hitter Shelby Jones and defensive specialist Brianna West.

In the first set, Armstrong notched 15 kills and no errors in 30 attacks for a .500 hitting percentage en route to the 10-point win.

Armstrong used a 9-4 run midway through the second set to pull away for the 2-0 advantage, but Francis Marion fought back in the third set, leading as late at 18-17, before the Pirates won eight of the final nine points to clinch the match.

Senior Stephanie Sfara led the Pirates with 10 kills, while senior Kamryn Sherman delivered 30 assists, six digs, and five kills and senior Morgan Hill notched 12 digs.
