Flying Fleet defeat Francis Marion 3-1

Box Score

FLORENCE, SC – Martin Maschio Jr. scored a pair of second-half goal and Erskine College never trailed in capturing a 3-1 non-conference win over Francis Marion University, Wednesday night (Oct. 8) in men's soccer action.

Francis Marion drops to 6-2-2 and sees its five-match unbeaten string come to an end.  The Patriots will return to Peach Belt Conference play on Saturday when they play host to seventh-ranked Young Harris College at 5 p.m. on Hartzler Field.

FMU came into the match having allowed only five goals in nine matches, but the Flying Fleet (5-4-1) were able to find the back of the net three times.

The Patriots' lone score came from sophomore Shahin Hemat with four minutes remaining.  Hemat took a pass from freshman Ryan Kolenda and dribbled through traffic before firing a 10-yard shot into the right side of the Erskine goal.  It was Hemat's third score of 2014 and his seventh career tally.

FMU outshot Erskine 15-11 and both teams took three corner kicks.

Patriot sophomore goalkeeper Mike Warn posted four saves, while Erskine keeper Fiore Costa also made four stops.

Francis Marion had several good scoring opportunities in the opening 27 minutes.  Following a good passing sequence, freshman Julius Broman's 18-yard shot from the right side went just outside the left post at 13:55.  Junior Sven Ricke had a back-heel shot from seven yards out that rolled inches outside the left post at 21:00, and six minutes later he intercepted an Erskine pass, but his eight-yard attempt in the box sailed outside the right post.

The Flying Fleet took a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when Ross Henderson scored on a free kick from 21 yards out.  Maschio registered his goals only 2:18 apart in the 50th and 52nd minutes.

Prior to Hemat's goal, the Patriots had a pair of close-range shots at a nearly open goal, but twice pushed the ball over the crossbar.
