Box Score MILLEDGEVILLE, GA – Junior Alexzandra Reed pounded out a team-high 13 kills, while sophomore middle blocker Caroline Boone had perhaps her best all-around game of the season with eight kills, six blocks, and five service aces to help Francis Marion University to a three-game sweep (28-26, 25-16, 25-23) of Georgia College, Saturday afternoon (Oct. 4) in Peach Belt Conference women's volleyball action.
FMU improves to 5-9 overall and again evens its PBC mark at 3-3. The Patriots will play at USC Aiken on Wednesday night at 7 p.m., before hosting Columbus State University on Friday at 7 p.m.
Reed also recorded 10 digs to post her sixth double-double of the 2014 campaign. Sophomore hitter Carlie Smith registered eight kills and a career-high 13 digs, while senior setter Sloane Shank handed out 30 assists.
The Patriot defense received 61 serves on Saturday and committed only two reception errors.
Miller Howard paced Georgia College (7-8, 2-6) with nine kills. Setter Mollie Michel dished out 25 assists and Ella Anastasiades dug up a match-high 21 balls.
In the opening set, a kill by Boone on a Shank assist fought off a set point for the Bobcats and forged a late 26-26 deadlock. Two attack errors by Georgia College allowed the Patriots to eke out the 28-26 win. In set two, FMU held the Bobcats to a negative hitting percentage. FMU trailed early at 7-5, but the Patriots used an 11-1 run behind the serving of Boone and Smith to take command.
Francis Marion again trailed early in the third set. A 4-0 spurt midway through the set gave the Patriots the lead, but Georgia College rallied late to knot the score at 23-23. Kills by Smith and Reed provided the Patriots with the clinching points. Smith assisted on Reed's final attack.
