Box Score PEMBROKE, NC – Sophomore middleblocker Caroline Boone pounded out a career-high 20 kills along with a .457 hitting percentage to lead Francis Marion University to a 25-11, 28-26, 25-27, 25-21 road victory over UNC Pembroke, Friday night (Oct. 24) in Peach Belt Conference women's volleyball action.
Francis Marion improves to 7-15 overall and 4-9 in conference play. The Patriots will travel back across the border again on Saturday to play at Queens University of Charlotte in a 7 p.m. start.
FMU senior setter Sloane Shank registered a good all-around match with 42 assists, 16 digs, six kills, and a pair of service aces. Junior libero Jessica Amador recorded a career-high 24 digs.
Backing up Boone along the frontline, junior Alexzandra Reed produced 11 kills, 13 digs, and two aces, while senior Shelby Jones had seven kills and six blocks.
Nicole Mathews paced UNCP (14-16, 2-11) with 16 kills and 16 digs. Sabrina Gonzalez handed out 40 assists and dug up 16 balls, while Danielle Brown posted a team-high 17 digs.
In the opening set, FMU used an early 12-2 run to grab control and cruise to an early lead. The Patriots held a commanding 10-3 lead in set two only to see the Braves rally to tie the set at 16-16 and eventually take a 21-20 lead. Trailing 26-25, Francis Marion got kills from Jones and Reed and then an attach error by UNCP to rally for the 28-26 win
Serving for the match at 25-24 in the third set, Francis Marion surrendered the next three points allowing UNCP to win the game and stay in the match. However the Patriots ended the match with a four-point win in the fourth set. Leading only 15-13, FMU pieced together a 5-1 run to create some breathing room. Boone ended the match with a kill from a Shank assist.
