Box Score GREENWOOD, SC -- Coming off an impressive three-set win during the week, Francis Marion (6-13) was unable to continue its success on the road Friday night, falling to Lander 3-0 (25-14, 28-26, 25-23).
FMU will be back in action on Sunday (Oct. 19) as the Patriots travel to Flagler for a 2:00 p.m. showdown. They will be at home again on Wednesday (Oct. 22) when FMU hosts nationally ranked Armstrong State at 7:00 p.m.
The Patriots managed to spread out much of their attacking against Lander (15-5) yet again with six players registering multiple kills on the evening. Alexzandra Reed led FMU with 11 kills while Caroline Boone (nine), Shelby Jones (six) and Carlie Smith (five) combined for 20 kills.
Reed completed another double-double for her with 13 digs, while setter Sloane Shank had 35 assists and 12 digs. Libero Jessica Amador dug up 21 balls.
The offensive effort was not enough to keep up with Kendall Korte and the Bearcats though. Korte led all players with 14 kills. Close behind Korte for the Bearcats were Sydney Tracy and Kaitlyn Harrison who pitched in 12 kills each.
After dropping the first set, the Patriots battled back in the second set and forced extra play. FMU managed to tie the game at 26 before finally giving up consecutive points and conceding the set 28-26.
Despite falling down two sets to none, FMU came out shooting in the third set. The Patriots burst out to an early lead and managed to keep the score tied at 21-21 later in the set. Lander was able to fight off FMU's late rally though, ending the set with a kill by Kate Schwartz to finish off the match.
