Patriot Soccer Falls to Campbell 3-2

Box Score

Buies Creek, N.C. (Sept. 7, 2013) – Junior forward Chanel Harris scored her first goal of the 2013 season, but the Francis Marion University women's soccer team fell to Campbell University 3-2, Saturday afternoon in Buies Creek, N.C.

The Patriots (0-4-0) will return to action this Friday, as they travel to Greenville, N.C., to take on East Carolina University. Match time is set for 7 p.m.

FMU jumped on the board in the 18th minute when Harris received a pass from freshman midfielder Caroline Edmonds on the right flank, and beat Campbell's sophomore goalkeeper Alexis Connors inside the 18 yard line to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead. Edmonds and senior forward Yasmin Bunter were credited with assists on the goal.

In the 30th minute, FMU junior forward Dominique Evans was given a red card, which forced the Patriots to play with only 10 players for the final 60 minutes of the match.

The Camels (4-1-0) tied the score at 1-1 in the 34th minute when junior defender Kellsey Costello-Mays handled a cross at the right center of the box and poked the ball past Patriot sophomore goalkeeper Taylor O'Berry. Freshman midfielder Kine Thorsvik was awarded the assist on the play.

In the second half, Campbell scored two unanswered goals to push its lead to 3-1 through 71 minutes of play. CU freshman midfielder Payton Ormsby scored the Camels' second goal off a cross from Thorsvik in the 61st minute. Campbell's third goal came courtesy of junior midfielder Alexis Prada, who controlled a cross from the top of the box from freshman midfielder Murita Storey and pushed the ball past O'Berry.

The Patriots cut the deficit to one goal when junior forward Elizabeth Asare scored her second goal of the season in the 75th minute. Asare dribbled through the midfield and took on a CU defender in the left side of the box, creating an open shot and making the score 3-2.

However, despite two corner kicks, FMU was not able to score the tying goal in the final 15 minutes of the match, and Campbell held on for the one-goal victory.

The Camels held the advantage in shots (14-7) and corner kicks (8-2). O'Berry made six saves in goal for the Patriots, but took the loss. Connors earned the win for CU with only one save.
