Box Score HARTSVILLE, SC (Sept. 18, 2013) – The Francis Marion
University men's soccer team remained unbeaten in the 2013 season
after earning a 0-0 draw at Coker College Wednesday night.
FMU returns to the field Saturday, Sept. 21, as it travels to
Greeneville, Tenn., for a non-conference matchup with Tusculum
College. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
The Patriots (2-0-2) outshot the Cobras (1-1-2) 18-10, and held
a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. FMU freshman goalkeeper Nick Stover made seven
saves en route to his second career shutout. Coker goalkeeper
Kyndle Cobb finished the match with six saves.
Both squads remained nearly even through the first half, with
FMU holding a narrow 6-5 advantage in shots. One of the Patriots'
best scoring chances in the first half came off the foot of junior
midfielder Benjamin Kwast in
the 36th minute, but was saved by Cobb.
FMU opened the second half with shots in the first four minutes
from Kwast and senior forward Cody Ferrier, but Cobb shut the door
once again to keep the score deadlocked at 0-0. The Patriots' best
chance to score in the second half came off a cross from freshman
midfielder Shahin
Hemat to Kwast inside the goal-box. Kwast launched a diving
shot towards the bottom right corner of the goal, but was knocked
away by Cobb.
In overtime, Coker nearly won the match in the first minute when
the ball was shot in the top left corner of the goal over the
diving Stover. However, offside was called on the Cobras,
disallowing the goal. The Patriots would register two shots in the
first overtime period from sophomore midfielder Joergen Tesdal
and Hemat, but both shots were over the goal, not requiring a save
from Cobb.
The Patriots held possession through most of the second overtime
period but once again only had two shots on goal, neither requiring
a Cobb save. The Patriot defense held strong in the overtime
periods, and didn't allow a Coker shot on goal.
