Francis Marion turns the table on #11 Braves

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PEMBROKE, NC – After losing the opening game of Saturday's (April 6) Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader 12-4, Francis Marion University turned the tables on the 11th-ranked UNC Pembroke Braves with an 11-5 game-two win and a split of the twinbill.

Francis Marion improves 18-14 overall and 11-8 in the PBC, while the Braves are now 27-10 and 15-8.  The two squads will conclude their three-game series with a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Junior right fielder Isaac Davenport was 3-for-4 in game two with a pair of runs scored and one RBI to lead the Patriots, while newly installed FMU catcher Cole Morris was 2-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, and three driven in.

FMU sophomore right-hander Chris Harrison (3-0) remained unbeaten as he held the Braves to two earned runs on eight hits in six innings.  Junior righty Jeffrey Stoner picked up his third save of 2013 as he pitched the final three frames.

FMU scored twice in the first on an error and an RBI single by senior first baseman Rhodes Dickerson.  Dickerson also had a hit in game one to extend his latest hitting streak to 10 games. The Darlington native has now hit safely in 24 of his last 25 games.

After the Braves got one run back in the bottom of the first, FMU plated five runs in the top of the second.  The outburst included an RBI single by Morris, a sacrifice fly by Stephen Tarkenton, a two-run triple by Michael Wilson, and a UNCP passed ball.

UNCP did trim the margin to 8-4, but Francis Marion added three insurance runs in the eighth.  Morris drove home two with a double, his first collegiate extra-base hit, and later scored on a wild pitch.

Braves starter Jordan DeLoatch (3-1) absorbed the loss as he allowed seven runs on seven hits in only 1.1 innings.

UNCP pounded out 17 hits, including a trio of home runs, and registered five multi-run innings en route to the 12-4 game-one win.

FMU senior center fielder Jarrod Reed was 2-for-5 with two RBIs in the opener, while senior designated hitter Will Chandler was also 2-for-5.

Patriot senior right-hander Don Sandifer (3-4) was saddled with the loss after yielding nine runs (six earned) on 12 hits and a pair of walks in 5.1 innings of work.

UNCP got 3-hit days from four different players, including sophomore Zade Denton who homered and drove in four runs on a 3-for-4 tally. Drew Cole turned in his third home run of the season to highlight a 3-for-5 hitting line, while Drew Alford turned in a 3-for-5 performance as well.

Connor Pratt (2-2) made good on his second start in three days, this time picking up the win after scattering seven hits and four runs (three earned) across six innings from the hill.

UNCP took a first-inning lead on a pair of RBI singles, but Francis Marion utilized two hits, including an RBI single by Reed, and an ill-timed throwing error in the top of the second to knot things back up at 2-2.

The Braves scored twice in the bottom of the second and three times in the third to go up 7-2.  The Patriots cut into the deficit with lone runs in the fifth (on a David DeWolfe run-scoring single) and sixth (Reed RBI groundout) innings, but the Braves got two home runs to key a 3-run sixth inning.
