Wolves bite back and get revenge against Patriots

NEWBERRY, SC- Senior third baseman Stephen Tarkenton propspered once again from batting second in the lineup, but it was not enough as the Francis Marion University baseball team fell to the Newberry College Wolves 6-4 in a single game series on Tuesday (March 19).

The Patriots fell to 12-9 overall and will play one more non-conference game on the road this week as the travel to take on Limestone College on Wednesday (March 20) at 2 p.m.

Tarkenton led the Patriots at the plate getting three hits, while senior first baseman Rhodes Dickerson extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a sixth inning single.

Newberry (16-13) got on the board early when a Albert Baur single scored Andy Vogel giving the Wolves a 1-0 lead. The Patriots would strike back in the third inning, when after a Jarrod Reed walk and a Tarkenton single, senior Will Chandler doubled down the right field line scoring Reed to tie the game up. The next batter was junior David DeWolfe, who although he grounded out to the second baseman, drove in Tarkenton to take the lead 2-1. Newberry would score two more runs in the bottom of the third to give them a 3-2 lead.

In the top of the fourth, Reed singled up the middle plating Isaac Davenport to tie the game back up at three all. The big blow came in the bottom of the fourth when Newberry would score three runs to take a 6-3 lead. FMU would only score one more run in the game which came in the eighth when Brett Fulmer singled to drive in Dalton Gress.

Right-handed freshman Chance DuCharme got the start for the Patriots and had a tough outing in his first start of the season. Ducharme went three and a two-thirds innings giving up six runs on 10 hits and only striking out one. Freshman Daniel Barfield came in to relieve Ducharme and was very strong on the mound. Barfield went four and a third innings only allowing three hits and no runs.

Wesley Camp got the start and win for Newberry by going seven innings and giving up three runs on seven hits.
