Tough Pitching Day allows Bobcats to score big in Game One

Box Score

MILLEDGEVILLE, GA - Four Patriots accounted for 13 of their team's 17 hits, including two home runs by senior designated hitter Will Chandler, but two five-run innings by Georgia College was enough to secure a 19-11 victory over Francis Marion University in the first game of the three-game series, Saturday afternoon (March 16) in Peach Belt Conference play.

FMU dropped its record to 10-8 overall and 5-5 in conference play, and will look to bounce back against the Bobcats (14-7, 7-3) in a doubleheader on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Chandler was the big reason the Patriots were able to stay in the game as he hit his first home run of the game and third of the season in the second inning. Two innings later, he hit his second homer, a shot over the left field fence. Chandler drove in four runs along with six other Patriots driving in at least one run.

Senior third baseman Stephen Tarkenton had three hits including a double in the first inning that gave the Patriots an early 1-0 lead. Senior first baseman Rhodes Dickerson who came into the game sporting a 10-game hitting streak extended it to 11 with an RBI single. Junior leftfielder David DeWolfe had a four-hit day which led the team with one of those hits being a double to left field.  Junior right fielder Isaac Davenport was 3-for-3 with an RBI.

Coming out of the top of the first, the Patriots led 4-0 and it looked like it was going to be a good day. The lead was extended to 6-0 in the top of the second.  However, the Bobcats responded by scoring 14 runs over the next four innings.

FMU senior right-hander Jeffrey Stoner, who has pitched like an ace since moving back to the rotation, had a tough day on the mound. In just four innings, Stoner (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season as he allowed 11 hits and nine earned runs including a fourth-inning home run by Cody Mass who had five RBIs for the Bobcats.

After Stoner was forced out the game early, junior right-hander Brandon Stoots did not have any better success as he lasted just 2.1 innings allowing six hits and seven runs.

Getting the win for the Bobcats was John Clark (4-1). Clark went five innings and gave up 12 hits and eight runs. Jordan Brooks came in and got a four-inning save, allowing only three runs on five hits.
