Box Score 2 AIKEN, SC – Three Francis Marion University pitchers combined for 20 strikeouts and senior catcher Jacob Golliday delivered a two-out two-run single in the top of the 14th inning to give Francis Marion University a 4-2 win over sixth-ranked USC Aiken and a split of their Sunday afternoon (Feb. 24) Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader.
Francis Marion (5-5, 1-2) lost Sunday's opening game 9-3 as the Pacers pounded out 19 hits.
FMU will travel to Gaffney, S.C., to face Limestone College on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
Junior right-hander Jeffrey Stoner started game two for Francis Marion and allowed two runs on three hits in eight innings with 12 strikeouts. Freshman John Rossi (1-1) pitched five scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and fanning seven. After Rossi issued a walk to open the bottom of the 14th inning, sophomore Justin Turbeville recorded the final three outs, one by strikeout, to earn his first collegiate save.
Senior center fielder Jarrod Reed led the Patriots with a 3-for-5 effort in game two, while senior first baseman Rhodes Dickerson was 2-for-5.
Reed started the decisive 14th frame by striking out, but he reached base when the third strike was a wild pitch. He moved to second on a second wild pitch, and after designated hitter Stephen Johnson walked, both runners moved up on a passed ball. With two outs, Golliday delivered a two-run single up the middle.
USCA (10-2, 2-1) took a 1-0 lead in the fifth on a solo home run by first baseman Ty Barkell. FMU responded with two runs in the sixth. Both Reed and Dickerson registered two-out RBI singles. The Pacers tied the game with a single tally in the bottom of the seventh.
In game one, FMU took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Reed hit a run-scoring single down the right field line and Golliday came home on a two-out infield error.
Johnson was the only Patriot to register two hits in Sunday's opener
USCA would answer back in the bottom half of the inning, when third baseman JJ Loker hit a solo home run. The big inning for the Pacers came in the third, when they tallied five hits and scored four runs, including a two-run homer by designated hitter Bill Gerstenslager.
The Patriots would plate one more run in the fifth inning, when shortstop Michael Wilson was hit by a pitch, advanced to third after two errors, and scored on a balk.
FMU senior righty Don Sandifer (1-2) had a tough outing as he only lasted 2.1 innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on eight hits.
