Patriots rally for extra-inning 3-2 win

Box Score

FLORENCE, SC – Senior catcher Jacob Golliday scored from first base on a bunt single and ensuing throwing error with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning as Francis Marion University rallied for a 3-2 win over the College of Saint Rose, Sunday afternoon (Feb. 10) in college baseball action.

The win gives Francis Marion (4-3) the rubber game of the three-game weekend series with the Golden Knights (1-2).  FMU will play host to Seton Hill University for a doubleheader on Saturday (Feb. 16) at 1 p.m.

With one out in the 11th, Golliday walked. Senior center fielder Jarrod Reed followed with a bunt single to third base and Golliday came around to score when the ball was thrown wildly past the first baseman.

Francis Marion was held to only five hits, with no Patriot gathering more than one. The Golden Knights also managed only five hits, including two by center fielder Derek Reed.

FMU junior right-hander Jeffrey Stoner returned to the Patriot starting rotation and allowed only two runs, one of which was unearned, on four hits in eight innings.  He struck out 10 and walked none.  Stoner faced the minimum 16 batters through 5.1 innings. Sophomore righty Chris Harrison (1-0) pitched the final three frames, allowing no runs on one hit to earn the win.

The Patriots were handcuffed by Saint Rose starter Josh Johnson through eight innings as the Golden Knights built a 2-0 advantage.  FMU scratched out a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth, but then left the bases loaded forcing the first extra-inning game in the short history of Cormell Field at Sparrow Stadium.

Junior infielder Michael Wilson doubled to lead off the last of the ninth and moved to third on a one-out single to center by senior third baseman Stephen Tarkenton.  After Kyle Charron relieved Johnson on the mound, Golliday was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out.  Reed followed with a bouncer to the first baseman who threw high to second for the force, but then the shortstop dropped the ball when he applied the tag on Golliday while Wilson scored from third.  Senior designated hitter Will Chandler then grounded to second, but Reed beat the throw to the second base bag with Tarkenton crossing the plate as the tying run.

Charron recovered to get David DeWolfe to ground to second base and Golliday was forced out at home and then junior infielder Stephen Johnson struck out swinging on a full-pitch count to end the frame.

Saint Rose broke up Stoner's no-hit bid in the top of the sixth inning when left fielder Brian Maynard singled through the left side with one out. That led to the Golden Knights' two runs.  Maynard and infielder Joseph Carcone both scored when Charron (then playing third base) singled to right field and the relay throw was airmailed past third base, which allowed the second runner to cross home plate.

The pitchers' duel saw the first eight innings completed in one hour and 26 minutes.
