Box Score 2 FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University captured a key Peach Belt Conference win over visiting USC Aiken and then swept to a three-set win over non-conference foe Saint Augustine's University, Saturday afternoon (Oct. 26) in women's volleyball action.
Francis Marion improves to 17-4 overall and retains sole possession of second place in the PBC with a 9-3 mark. The Patriots sweep the season series from USCA for the first time in five years. FMU will return action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. with a conference match at UNC Pembroke.
Against USCA, senior Jessica Imbimbo recorded her eighth double-double of the season with a career-high equaling 18 kills and 15 digs. She hit .455 with only three errors in 33 swings. Sophomore Alexzandra Reed added 16 kills. Senior setter Kailey Smith tallied 48 assists, eight digs, four blocks, and two service aces. Junior libero Rebekah Davis dug up a match-high 21 balls and committed only one reception error in 35 serve receptions.
The Patriots rallied from an eight-point deficit in set one and closed on a 14-6 run that was capped by an Imbimbo kill. FMU again rallied in set two, erasing a 15-12 deficit to grab a 17-15 advantage. Another Imbimbo kill off a Smith assist provided the clinching 25th point.
Francis Marion wiped out an eight-point Pacer lead in set three, but USCA (15-8, 7-5) fought off an FMU match point and claimed the 27-25 win to force a fourth set. Francis Marion jumped out to an early 7-4 lead and never trailed in the final set. Smith set Imbimbo for a kill that was the final point of the match.
Ashley Diedrich and Aly Johnson led USCA with nine kills apiece. Setters Sheila Walsh (18) and Amanda Bologna (16) combined for 34 assists, while libero Danielle Mercer had 17 digs.
In the victory over Saint Augustine's (8-13), Francis Marion only trailed briefly in the early stages of the third set.
Senior middleblocker Megan Mooney posted a season-high equaling 12 kills to lead the Patriots. Freshman middleblocker Caroline Boone served seven of the Patriots' 12 aces, while junior setter Sloane Shank handed out 35 assists, and Davis registered 13 digs.
USCA defeated Saint Augustine's 25-11, 25-18, 25-20 in the middle match of the day.
