Box Score

Orangeburg, S.C. (Oct. 22, 2013) – Junior forward Chanel Harris scored in the second minute of overtime to give Francis Marion a 2-1 overtime victory over South Carolina State University, Tuesday night in NCAA Division I women's soccer action.

FMU will return to Hartzler Field this weekend for its final two home matches of the 2013 season. The first match will be Friday, Oct. 25th against Western Carolina University at 7 p.m. It will also play host to Appalachian State University on Sunday, Oct. 27th at 2 p.m.

Both matches this weekend will be broadcast online for free and shown locally on Time Warner Cable Chanel 11 courtesy of the Patriots Sports Network.

The Patriots outshot the Bulldogs 14-12, and held a 7-1 advantage on corner kicks. FMU sophomore Taylor O'Berry earned the win in goal while making four saves. Haley Austin took the loss for S.C. State (6-12-1) despite making six saves.

Freshman Caroline Edmonds had the best opportunity to put the Patriots on the board first in the 32nd minute, but her shot clanked the post. Senior Yasmin Bunter also got off a shot in the 34th minute, but was saved by Austin.

The Bulldogs were first on the scoreboard with a goal from Kaitlynn Cortez in the 61st minute from straight on. The Patriots looked to quickly tie the game back up when they earned a penalty kick in the 65th minute, but Bunter pushed the ball just wide of the net.

FMU was able to tally the equalizer in the 78th minute off the foot of sophomore Kristyn Leung. Freshman Kelly Anthony took a corner kick which was headed at the goal by Harris, but was knocked away by Austin. Leung followed the shot, and scored off the rebound to knot the game at 1-1. It was Leung's first goal of the season, while Anthony and Harris were credited with assists.

O'Berry made her final save in the 80th minute to keep the match tied at 1-1. Bunter had the final chance for the Patriots in regulation, but her shot was just high of the goal.

It was a quick overtime session as Harris secured the game-winner in the 92nd minute. Harris got behind Austin and received a cross from junior Elizabeth Asare. She was able to control the cross, and put the ball in the back of the net to send the Patriots home with a victory. It was her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
