MISENHEIMER, NC- Francis Marion University took advantage of three Pfeiffer University errors in the top of the sixth inning en route to a 4-0 game-two win to salvage a doubleheader split after dropping the first game 3-2, Tuesday afternoon (April 10) at Jack Ingram Field in Misenheimer, N.C.
After five scoreless innings in game two between the two teams, FMU (29-13) got a one-out single from sophomore Taylor Luff followed by senior Destinea Schneider and sophomore Sara Broderick both reaching on Pfeiffer (18-31) errors. Junior Olivia Ferguson reached on a fielder's choice that plated Luff after an error by the catcher putting FMU up 1-0. Senior Ashley Jaramillo singled in two runs and pushed the Patriot edge to 3-0, before junior Tristan Faile drove home the final run with an RBI single.
Luff (8-3) went the distance in the second game, only giving up two hits and walking three, while registering 10 strikeouts in the win. Shelby Brown was the losing pitcher for the Falcons. FMU had only four hits and was led by Jaramillo's 1-for-3 day with her two RBIs.
In the day's opener, Francis Marion scored a single tally in the first two innings to go up 2-0.
The first run came courtesy of an RBI single from Ferguson in the first inning. The second run came when junior Jazz Holiday scored on a throwing error by the Falcons' left fielder.
The Patriots couldn't hold the lead however as the Falcons tacked on three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to four hits strung together, all coming with two outs.
Senior Kayla Ellingsen (10-6) pitched 3.2 innings and gave up three runs, before giving way to freshman righty Katie Carnes in relief. Carnes worked the final 2.1 innings, striking out three. Ellingsen took the loss as Lindsey Russell picked up the win for Pfeiffer.
The Patriots were outhit seven to four in the opener with Broderick and Ferguson producing the team's RBIs.
The Patriots are back in action on Saturday afternoon as they return to Peach Belt Conference play with a 1 p.m. road doubleheader at Georgia Southwestern State University.
