Jones nets 25 as FMU lights up the Knights 132-120

Box Score

FLORENCE, SC – Sophomore forward Dustin Jones came off the bench to score a season-high 25 points as high-scoring Francis Marion University outlasted St. Andrews University 132-120, Saturday afternoon (Nov. 24) on the first day of the Zaxby's Tip-Off Clazzic.

In Saturday's opener, UNC Pembroke defeated Coker College 68-61.  UNCP (2-3) will play St. Andrews (0-5) on Sunday at 1 p.m. and Francis Marion (2-0) will meet Coker (0-3) at 3 p.m. as the annual clazzic concludes.

Jones tallied his 25 points on 9-of-13 shooting in only 23 minutes of action.  He led seven players in double figures for the Patriots, who record 100 points in consecutive games for only the third time in program history.  The two previous times occurred late last season and early in the 1979-80 campaign.

Patriot swingman Markcus Falley followed Jones with a 21-point, five-steal effort.  Junior 6-8 center Nequan Melvin registered 15 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore guard Clayton Williams scored 13, junior guard Tyler Deihl 13, junior guard Evrik Gary 12, and junior forward Robert Carpenter 11.  Williams also handed out a career-high eight assists.

Junior guard Clavontae Brown led St. Andrews with 26 points in a reserve role.  He missed only one field goal attempt (6-of-7) and was a perfect 14-of-14 at the foul line.  Freshman point guard D.J. Carnegie tallied 25 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists.  Senior forward Demetrius Monroe added 21 points, while Christopher Clay and freshman forward Mark McCorkle each scored 17 points.

Francis Marion scored the game's opening 11 points and led 18-4 at the first media timeout. The Knights closed to within four points on two occasions, the final time at 29-25, before junior point guard Chris Rhodes ignited a 15-2 run that gave FMU a 17-point margin at 44-27.  St. Andrews gradually chipped away at the deficit and eventually trimmed the FMU advantage to 59-54 when Clay banked in a 40-footer at the halftime horn.

The Knights continued their rally in the second stanza, outscoring FMU 15-8 over the opening three-and-a-half minutes.  St. Andrews took its only lead of the contest at 69-67 on a fast-break dunk by Monroe off a feed from Clay.  Back-to-back inside buckets from Alex Tucker and Storm Clonch regained the lead for the Patriots.

A 19-8 spurt over four minutes by the Patriots pushed the advantage to 92-79 near the midway point of the second half.  The lead grew to 20 points, 106-86, following a three-pointer by Jones with 7:36 left.  St. Andrews cut the margin to eight at 113-105 after a three-pointer by Marquie Smith with 3:47 on the clock, but Falley and Jones answered with consecutive three-pointers to extend the lead back to 14 points.

Francis Marion was 48-of-100 from the field, including 17-of-46 from beyond the three-point arc.  The latter stats matched the school record for triples attempted, set on Monday night in the season opener.  FMU missed only three free throws, finishing the game 19-of-22.

St. Andrews shot 60 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes and concluded the game at 53.6 percent.  The Knights were 36-of-43 at the foul stripe.

However, FMU forced 28 Knight turnovers that resulted in 44 points, while the Patriots committed only 17 miscues.
