FLORENCE, SC – Junior swingman Darryn Frazier scored a career-high 16 points for the second consecutive game and Francis Marion University drained 14 three-point field goals to down Johnson & Wales University (N.C.) 101-58, Wednesday evening (Jan. 25) in men's non-conference basketball action.
Francis Marion improves to 11-7 with its fifth win in its last six contests. The Patriots now hit the road for a pair of key Peach Belt Conference match-ups: Saturday afternoon at Georgia Southwestern State University and Sunday afternoon at Columbus State University.
Frazier was 6-of-11 from the field, including 4-of-9 on three-point attempts, while also grabbing seven rebounds and handing out four assists. As a team, FMU connected on 14-of-36 three-point shots, the second-highest single total in team history. FMU was 17-of-32 last season against The Apprentice School.
Altogether six Patriots scored in double figures. Senior forward Liki Turner tallied 15 points and seven rebounds, while junior forward Zamarius McLendon scored 14 points, sophomore guard Evrik Gary 11, senior center Andrew Smith 10, and freshman guard Clayton Williams a career-high 10.
Freshman forward DaShaun Alston led JWU (1-22) with 12 points and six assists. Two other Wildcats scored eight points apiece.
FMU scored the game's opening six points and never trailed. However, the Patriots were not able to shake the pesky Wildcats until late in the first half.
A three-pointer by sophomore guard Alexander Bridgeforth pulled Johnson & Wales to within 17-15 with 9:28 left before halftime. The margin stood at seven points until Francis Marion closed the first stanza on a 23-6 run to lead 49-25 at intermission. The Patriots shot 51.4 percent over the opening 20 minutes, including 9-of-19 from beyond the arc, while holding the Wildcats to only 29 percent shooting.
An 18-7 spurt over the opening six minutes of the second half provided Francis Marion with a 67-32 advantage. FMU's largest lead came at 101-55 on a three-pointer from the right corner by Clayton Williams.
Francis Marion converted 19 Wildcat turnovers into 33 points and with a 44-33 rebounding edge led in second-chance points 20-5. A decided height advantage allowed FMU to register a 44-20 advantage in points-in-the-paint.
