Shuey's slam sparks 10-run inning and Patriots to split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DAHLONEGA, GA – Senior first baseman Preston Shuey's grand slam homer highlighted a 10-run fifth inning as 15th-ranked Francis Marion University defeated North Georgia College & State University 10-4 to earn a split of Saturday's (April 9) Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader.  North Georgia scored nine times over the first three innings and then held off a late FMU rally to claim a 9-6 victory in game one.

Despite the split, Francis Marion (28-10, 12-5) moved into sole possession of first place in the Peach Belt, while North Georgia moves to 22-13 and 8-11.  The two teams will conclude their three-game series with a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday.

In the second game, North Georgia took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a solo homer off FMU senior righty Phillip Mozingo (6-1).  Mozingo, who finished with eight strikeouts, then proceeded to throw four scoreless frames and FMU scored all the runs it would need with the 10-run fifth.

The big outburst included seven hits, four walks, a hit batter, a wild pitch, and a balk.  Shuey's long ball gave FMU a 5-1 lead. The final five runs all came with two outs and included a two-run double by second baseman Brock McCallister.

McCallister finished the game 3-for-6, while third baseman Michael Wilson, shortstop Tyler Cappelmann, and catcher Jeff Gaston all had two hits.  Senior righty Corey Carver pitched the final three innings to earn his first save of 2011.

In game one, the Saints quickly knocked out FMU sophomore right-hander Don Sandifer (8-2) by scoring three times in the first and five times in the second.  The loss snapped Sandifer's eight-game winning streak.

A single tally in the third upped North Georgia's advantage to 9-0.  FMU scored once in the sixth and once in the eighth to trim the margin to 9-2.

In the top of the ninth, Francis Marion scored four times and had the tying run on base when righty Jacob Rickett got Cappelmann to pop out for the final out.  The final inning rally was aided by five walks and a hit batter and included only one Patriot hit – a two-run single by Buddy Sosnoskie.

Sosnoskie finished game one 3-for-5 with three RBIs, while Cappelmann was 2-for-5.

Jordan Erisman and Troy Snitker both hit two-run homers for the Saints, while Brad Hall was 2-for-4 with a double and four runs driven in.
